Structure and infrastructure

“Structure and infrastructure” is the thematic section of EDA dedicated to the multidisciplinary scope of construction and design, specifically dedicated to structures and transport infrastructure and service. In this section studies, research and realizations sent by academics, designers, construction companies, local authorities, such as universities, research centers, municipalities, provinces, regions, roads, highways, railways, port interport, hospitals managers. Jobs sent to the editorial staff are selected on the basis of the criteria of originality, consistency with the sectorial theme, the innovativeness of the proposed topic, the scientific and design importance. Each paper is evaluated within 30 days from the receipt, and the author will receive by this time the outcome of the peer review carried out, including judgment. The work deemed worthy of publication will appear on-line at the time of acceptance from the author and are valued as national publication online with ISSN code.



Area of interest of the thematic section:

1 - Design of infrastructure: it is dedicated to infrastructure projects that contain innovations and high quality of the project, also witnessed by awards and commendations.

2 - Design: is dedicated to structural design that contain innovations and high quality of the project, also witnessed by awards and commendations.

3 - Research: is dedicated to structural studies and infrastructure projects by young (maximum age of first author 35 y.o.) of particular importance and interest.

4 - Public: is dedicated to structural studies and infrastructure made by public bodies of particular importance and interest.

A comparative study of the lime mortar. Cali, Colombia
Two types of lime mortar (glue and plaster) have been characterized, and these types of lime mortar were used in the construction of masonry bridges, called Puente Calicanto or Puente Ortiz, which are located in Cali (Colombia) and were put into service in 1845. To this end, the techniques of X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy by Fourier Transform (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) have been employed. Using these different techniques, it can be concluded that each of these mortars exhibit differences in the proportion of their constituent materials, and the successful use of empirical knowledge can be demonstrated in the selection of the types of lime used by the builders. XRD characterization is adequate when crystalline phases are present, but for low-crystallinity materials, FT-IR analysis and DSC are more appropriate.

After the 2009 l´Aquila earthquake, the Italian National Fire Corps developed specific decision support tools for shoring damaged buildings and for safeguarding the cultural heritage. In particular, an innovative approach for the standardization of the urgent interventions of temporary works was introduced with the Vademecum STOP (Shoring Templates and Operating Procedures) and, successively, a specific Handbook was realized for the training of specialists in the post-earthquake urban shoring.

The paper outlines the activities and the framework of the organization set up in the last years by the national system of civil protection in the field of the management and the coordination of technical activities during the seismic post-event emergency phase. It is well known that the time of the emergency is the most tricky and demanding among the civil protection activities. In order to ensure a right and effective outcome of the actions it is required to set procedures, technical tolls, qualified staff and team management, coordination between administrations and authorities.

Hidden in the green countryside near Florence in Bagno a Ripoli (FI), the small stone arch bridge over the Rignalla brook, left tributary of the river Arno, has been recently discovered. The Reclamation Consortium of Central Tuscany, the authority for the protection and maintenance of soil and waterways, has entrusted us with a research project aimed at a cognitive analysis of the bridge and a rehabilitation and functional recovery project for a pedestrian public use. The date of the laying of the foundation-stone in unknown: it is believed to be a “Roman bridge”. The historical research, also supported by the static analysis to evaluate the degree of stability of such a structure, suggests the possibility to attribute the design of the bridge to Leonardo da Vinci.

The Beijing-Shangai high speed railway started the construciton in 2008 and has been recently completed: this high-speed new railway line is 1318 km long with a design speed of 350 km/h, including structures as the relevant Yangtze river crossing in Jiangsu province. The new Dashengguan bridge is located in 1.5km upstream of the existing 3rd Nanjing Yangtze road bridge, the alignment of which was based on the general construction scheme of the Beijing-Shangai high speed railway, the Shangai-Wuhan-Chengdu express railway, the urban rail transit system, and the local geological and hydrological conditions. This article deals with the description of the Dashengguan bridge, as it could be considered the world´s longest span high speed railway bridge ever built.

The empirical approach in the evolution of bridge and structure
This paper illustrates the result of a study concerning the design and modeling of structures of the famous Italian engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979). His approach in studying and in building a large amount of structure, has a theoretical base, never investigated deeply. From an analysis of the documents and from a comparison among diverse buildings by Nervi, it is possible to recognize his innovative theory, in which structure and architecture are the subject of the art of making buildings: the theory of practice

In this study the cable types mostly used for these bridges and bridges abroad are describe: Based on damages observed in stay cables and improvements of the global design, the structural detailing, the sizing and the corrosion protection are shown with the aim of minimize the inspection and maintenance cost in the future.

Interventi di ispezione, manutenzione e ripristino dei ponti strallati
In this study the cable types mostly used for these bridges and bridges abroad are describe: locked coil ropes, parallel wire cables and parallel strand cables. Furthermore, general requirements for the inspection of bridges are dealt with and special techniques for the inspection of stay-cables are presented.

I ponti network arch: tra analisi e progettazione
In this study the unconventional bridge typology related to the network arch shape is presented and investigated. This typology, as stated from one of the principal investigator of this structural example (Per Tveit) should be preferred to standard vertical steel arch bridge cable arrangement in most cases, as illustrated in the following. Recent examples are presented and commented upon.

Ponti pedonali in acciaio inossidabile
In this study some examples related to steel bridges are reported and investigated. The aim is to deep the knowledge of stainless steel materials applied to a very wide variety of pedestrian bridges, in order to fill the gap of conventional building typologies. Advances in the knowledge and constructional details are investigated and illustrated.

Effetti del martellamento sulla risposta sismica di edifici adiacenti
When “pounding” occurs, the building structures are vulnerable to severe damage and/or collapse. In this paper the effect of impact is studied using linear and viscous_elastic contact force model for different separation distances and seven recorded earthquake excitation are used for input. Pounding produces acceleration, shear story and peak drift that are greater than ones obtain from the no pounding case. The evaluation of expected damage is checked through the seismic demand parameters.

Il controllo delle reti di ponti
La rete infrastrutturale italiana, ferroviaria e stradale, presenta oggi un elevato grado di vetustà e comporterà a breve-medio termine una ingente richiesta di stanziamenti per interventi di manutenzione e ricostruzione. In particolare i ponti si presentano oggi come elemento critico delle arterie infrastrutturali, in quanto non più in grado di sopportare carichi e velocità agenti sempre crescenti ed al limite in certi casi delle capacità resistenti dei materiali costitutivi assai degradati. Si pone dunque con urgenza il tema dellŽindividuazione di un parametro di gerarchizzazione degli interventi nella rete infrastrutturale via via in esame, non essendo possibile nella limitatezza delle risorse intervenire con rapidità sullŽintero insieme di ponti oggetto dellŽindagine. In Italia oltre al monitoraggio delle opere infrastrutturali previsto normativamente, non esiste una cogenza di adozione di sistemi di Bridge Managment (BMS), altrove più diffusi ed utilizzati. Si presenta nel seguito un sistema di bridge managment perfezionato recentemente, che pone le basi per future applicazioni in ambito infrastrutturale.

Le recenti innovazioni nei ponti ferroviari per l'Alta Velocità
Per quanto concerne i ponti di media luce, si vanno via via affermando soluzioni innovative con l'adozione sempre più diffusa in Francia e Spagna di ponti composti a doppia travata.
La tecnologia, già adottata correntemente per i ponti autostradali e stradali, viene opportunamente adattata alle richieste tecnologiche dell'Alta Velocità, aumentandone la rigidezza e agendo correttamente sul progetto per tenere in considerazione i diversi effetti dinamici dovuti al passaggio dei veicoli ad Alta Velocità.
