Jose Arechabala. S.A. Su impacto en la conservacion.
This paper synthesizes a partial result of the research carried out for the rescue of the collective memory of Cardenas's town; associated with the industrial epic of the firm ''Jose Arechabala S.A.'', one of the largest prestigious rum's distilleries in the island of Cuba and in the world in the twentieth century. It is part of the master's thesis of the main author's paper. From the history of the city and its harbor, one of the country's principal in this period, as well as its urban characteristics, the research identifies how these particularities allowed the process of creation and expansion of this industrial complex and highlights its importance in the economic and cultural rise of Cuba. It exposes great part of the elements that demonstrate that the Arechabala's history possesses unquestionable historical, urban, cultural and social values. The results achieved are intended to support the recognition and valorisation of this industry and its urban context that nowadays are depleted and that was an element key in the economic and social sphere of its town; being a scenery for the world of prosperity that a small city could achieve thanks to its industries and the actions of its people identified with her.

Keywords: Collective memory, Valorisation, Industrial heritage

Documents own to Ignazio Calvi, Secretary of the Scientific Committee of the Exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, held in Milan in 1939, let us value preliminary stages of the organization, such as the selection of members of many committes, or cultural policy and aims of the Exhibition. One of the main contribution are the lists of things to show, referred to each field of Leonardo's knowledge. In the case of architecture, a comparison has been realised between the preliminary list (with the sources of drawings and models) and the real exposition, presented through the Catalogue, after the radical changes of the architect Giuseppe Pagano, who organized the Exhibition.

Lo schermo della periferia
This essay intends to investigate the urban and human dimension in the movies of De Sica, Pasolini and Rosi. It intends to investigate, in particular, two pivotal movies in Pier Paolo Pasolini's Roman period, such as Accattone (1961) and Mamma Roma (1962), and Il tetto (1956) of De Sica, focusing on the re-semantization of film space related to a specific suburb area and the historical context. Accattone e Mamma Roma plots develop deeply linked both to Pasolini Fifty's romances and INA-Casa Government urban plan. Il Tetto plots develop inside of the neorealistic language of Zavattini and De Sica. In fact, at that time, Rome has started expanding its borders, building new suburbs in which a particular social class has gone living. In the three so-called movies 'della borgata' historical, social and architectonical background merges into fictional screen crossing disciplinary fields. Le mani sulla citta' (1963) by Rosi reveals another aspect of suburbs: the urban speculation. The four films represent both the genesis of the suburbs of Italian cities and their current problems.

Keywords: INA-Casa, Rome, Naples, dwelling, urban space, cinema and architecture, borgata.

The oasis: a story of displacement and resistance
This text describes the result of a participatory project I carried out in July 2015, in Moravia, a neighborhood located in Medellin, Colombia. The contemporary art center Fundacion Casa 3 Patios'and the Colombian Ministry of Culture aided the initiative; the former is an organization that researches pedagogy with social impact, alternative art, participatory town planning, architecture and curatorship. This project is part of a long-term practice-led research that investigates how artistic, design and humanistic appropriations of public space can inspire collective agency and positive transformations in neglected scenarios. In these situations the ephemeral interventions represent a pretext for activating a given social dynamic, rather than being the main goal of the research.

Fundaciones frustradas de conventos de monjas
The establishment of nunneries in different parts of the world corresponded to a desire of each order to expand their devotions throughout the territory, in an act that can be considered as an early form of the phenomenon known as globalization. The process followed in order to set up establish found a nunnery was complex and several factors were taken in consideration such as, good management, legal advice, and the existence of economic resources to guarantee the material construction of the urban-architectural ensemble and subsequently the support of the nuns, especially in the convents of nuns without money which is the case of the present work.
In this paper we reflect on the process of founding the convents of Franciscan nuns that were only were only proyects that weren't carried out and did not come to materialize in the bishopric of Michoacan, Mexico in the XVIII and XIX.

Some of rural downtown's communities in Mexico were defined around the Centers of Estates. Sometimes the contemporary constructions camouflaged with the historic buildings and otherwise the communities are indifferent to the monuments establishing the abandon and producing its lost. This is the principal reason of deterioration of San Joaquin Jaripeo's Centre. In this essay describe a brief idea of linking the community with their monument to achieve a recovery of identity and interest for the cultural heritage from a historical and technical appreciation of this building.

Implicaciones de la reconfiguracion territorial
The landscape, since his signification like cultural heritage or natural have turned in to a value more dificult to find. The inclution of new developments housing and the inmobiliary speculation have toke to the transformation of the territory, situation that results in significant impacts in the enviroment and in people lifestyle, in addition of provoking territorial reconfiguration. This work searching stablish how the territorial and of the landscape has incidence in lifestyle of the population of preexisting sites with cultural meaning. The phenomenon here presented expose the metropolization seen as a transformation factor of landscape and territory. This research to demostrate that landscape reconfiguration generates transformations in people lifestyle, in productive functions on rural comunity reached by metropolization. The methodology purposed is based on the regional geography and urban sociology, since the architectural and urbanism. This paper approaches the conception of preexisting sites with cultural meaning. La diversidad como medida
This brief paper proposes a reflection on the human scale. Throughout history the human body has been regarding units of measurement, literally Man was the measure of all things, however, the recognition of the human diversity raises questions about that reference. The perfect body is an utopia and it can not be anymore the design scale. Is it possible to take into account all the human diversity for the design? Reflection indicates that there is a common range that could be the basis of the measures in a new universal design perspective.

Key words: diversity, Universal Design, human scale

La mision de San Francisco del Laishi
This advance starts from the reflection on the utopia of the ''good place'' of Thomas More (eu-topos) and of architecture as a discipline that allows the utopia of the moment in a constructed project; This way of thinking is contextualized in the case of the mission of San Francisco del Laishi and its sugar mill in the province of Formosa in Argentina, engine of the sugar development of the region at the beginning of the 20th century and economic sustenance of the same for many years. The mission contains an architectural set of 2 churches, 2 guest houses, enclosures, kitchens, small museum, orchards among others, which is currently protected by Decree Law No. 891 of June 4, 1980, also carries the designation of Provincial Historic Monument And In accordance with Resolution Number 2354 of September 12, 1985, it is declared a Historical Monument of the Argentine Nation, however the ingenuity that forms the architectural set of the mission is protected only by Decree Law 1025 of March 30, 1981, To other small constructions nearby, the mission is the evidence built of the utopia of the Argentine government of turn that gives thousands of hectares of land to the Franciscan friars to indoctrinate in Catholicism and native nomads of 1900. In the advance one tries to analyze and to explain The context of the whole, its architecture and structure. The identified offers arguments for the valorization, conservation, rescue, disclosure, recognition, immediate physical intervention by the recent history of the urban settlement. This work is developed through an ideographic presentation with the objective of making the mission and the ingenuity a visible tourist destination, a cultural destination of international interest, as shown by the utopia built with characteristics of the 16th century.

Brickwork is a material with a long history of use, together with timber it is a material that has evolved with tradition and craft. Steel and concrete became and still are the predominant structural materials. Most engineering schools focus the teaching of structures around these two materials and relatively few schools include timber and brickwork in their curriculum. However by the middle of the 20th century, many engineers and academics began to re-appraise the use of brickwork and apply the techniques of research and analysis to brickwork. Research had actually started earlier but the major resurgence in interest is largely considered to have occurred in the 1950s when load-bearing engineered brickwork was used in the construction of tall buildings upto 18 storeys high with walls only 30 cm in thickness, which took advantage of the high compressive strength of the material and a rational engineering approach to the distribution of forces. A large research community developed, mostly in Europe, North America and Australia. Major conferences, research programmes and the development of national codes of practice for structural brickwork developed. This community was largely unaware of the work of Eladio Dieste, which was underway creating structural forms, construction techniques and analysis methods considerably in advance of what the community was itself working on.

Bruno Violi (Milan, 1909 - Bogota', 1971) is an Italian architect who definitively left Europe to move to Colombia in 1939. The essay presents a critical analysis of House Shaio, built in Bogota' in 1950, as an example of the direct and transversal form with which Violi took part in the development of modern architecture in the country, reconciling the baggage of experiences he built in Europe with Colombian environment and culture.

Lo spazio contemporaneo e le sue nature
A more concealed, less declared question is raised by Polesello project for Gdansk. Unlike other Polesello's elaborations that deal with the urban space survey, here the island confirms its limits, which are not questionable. So this work allows to enter into the substance of the different nature of open space. Jointly expressed in Gdansk project, they are strongly representative of specific problematic conditions of the contemporary city.

The History Room Jose' Antonio Echeverria, of CUJAE (SHC from now on, by its acronym in Spanish), showed relevant facts, personalities and awards achieved by the institution from its foundation until 1984. Even in 2002 it was frequently visited by students and other interested parties. The physical deterioration of the premises and certain methodological inadequacies in cultural promotion had an impact on its function and aesthetics. In 2016 it reopened its doors with a new functional approach centered on the principles of university sociocultural work (extension management) (M. Gonzalez Fernandez-Larrea, 2002). Hence, the objective of the present is to base theoretically and methodologically the integrative management used for the SHC to enrich the university cultural heritage and make it sustainable, a creative initiative of the Heritage Conservation Group and its adviser for the management of extension of the socio-cultural project.
Methods: documentary analysis, literature study, interview, participant observation and judging criteria. Results: Theoretical-methodological basis of the integrated management of the SHC for its sustainability, interactive chronogram, structure-strategy-organizational culture link in the SHC strategic projection, design of the SHC socio-cultural project, SHC computerization, integration of the substantive processes, with emphasis on the extension through the praxis of integral formation.
The SHC is a center promoting culture whose greatest contribution is manifested in the university heritage; it works through the integrative management of the substantive processes that makes it sustainable, and from which it manages to validate the praxis of integral formation as a novel academic form for professional training.
Keywords: History room, university sociocultural work (or extension management), praxis of integral formation.

Meticulously designed and planned, Hsinking, capital of Manchukuo, was intended to serve as the main showcase of the Japanese colonial rule in Asia and, at the same time, to represent the test for a wider range of urban projects. For this reason the city featured all those modern tools that was not possible to develop in the Japanese populous cities. In Hsinking, a small village before the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, architects and planners could freely experiment a variety of architectural solutions and urban approaches and, simultaneously, implement their fantasies of modernity in order to apply them on a larger scale throughout the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

The main purpose of this research is a re-reading of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento from different perspectives and at different speed of travel. The proposed method is based on the possible relationships between archaeology, landscape, infrastructure, in order to valorize the existing landscape. With a view to improve the Valley, the Archaeological Park could be reinterpreted as archaeological infrastructure connection between the current urban nucleus of Agrigento and neighbouring towns. Each element of the Valley could become one of the pieces of a single system that we could say archaeoinfrastructure, where the heart of a new Akragas could return to pulse during all months of the year.
The Agrigento area is characterized by the presence of five urban settlements that are daily inhabited by Agrigento's people as if they were only one city. The five cities (Agrigento, Villaggio Mose', San Leone, Porto Empedocle, Villa Seta) are connected by a system of streets oversized driveway that, paradoxically, does not allow a quick connection, and confuses the user dilating the crossing. The Valley is a place full of contradictions, due to the twentieth-century urban contaminations and the way it is currently inhabited. This study experiences possible inclusion of these dissociations to turn them into positive components, imagining a distant future where our great-grandchildren will treat with equal respect and care both Temples that the Viaduct Morandi.

Utopie del dinamismo urbano
Since the mid-nineteenth century, the metropolis appeared as one of the most dramatic and contradictory manifestations of the modern age, characterized by cultural and functional problems which required radical reforms in the issues of traffic and transport, in the housing and the organization of domestic life. The futurist Umberto Boccioni interpreted the explosive growth of the city in paintings like ''La citta' che sale'' and Mario Sironi in new urban landscapes of the industrial suburbs. In 1926, the German director Fritz Lang filmed ''Metropolis'' with the expressionist scenography of Erich Kettelhut. The dynamism and the problem of the future of the city became protagonists of discussions of the European, American and Japanese neo avant-garde, until the early seventies. During 1968, Italian radical groups, such as Archizoom or Superstudio, articulated a critique of capitalist cities, putting into question the structure and meaning in the urban utopia of a constant dynamism.
This paper, through the analysis of paintings and urban visions of the twentieth century, proposes to examine numerous design mode that investigated the theme of urban dynamism, looking for solutions or highlighting the limits of these futuristic utopias.
Keywords: metropolis, future progress, constant dynamism.

Progresso e Utopia
The utopian visions of Metropolis (1895) imagined by King Camp Gillette during the Brown Decades at the end of ninetieth, and the Universal Architecture (1932) proposed by Richard Buckminster Fuller in the twenties of twentieth century, are discussed and compared as being paradigms of community and urban planning programs. Both visions share indeed an absolute faith in science and technology progress as privileged vectors of an equally distributed wealth, while diverge on the institutional forms required in order to make effective their proposals. These urban visions, though different from the temporal and ideological point of view, not only give evidence to the impact of the utopian literature on the improvement and the transformation of the physical context, but constitute the theoretical foundation of technological utopianism and of iper-realism till the post-modernity.

I lager dell'utopia
The Mille communities will arise following the two principles of unity and equality - unity however will soon be shattered by factional infighting and equality by those all too obvious inequalities that are still much lamented.
We seek to remedy the most extreme material inequalities by assisting the poorest with public and private charities - today as then making recourse to citizens' income and thousands of voluntary initiatives. Apart from Thomas More's Utopia this programme involves defining once and for all appropriate behaviour for all citizens - behaviour that a group of experts pretend to understand and implement for their happiness. This attitude involves perceiving the whole of society as a true lager where all behaviour is codified, limitations to freedom that continue to suggest that they be regulated by the governments of contemporary society.

Study of the current patrimonial city
Cities for all. The urban landscape is the result of the interaction of three variables that are: the flat, the use of the ground and the building, giving rise to an infinite variety of urban scenarios, that is to say, urban landscapes. Each city must be analyzed in a systematic way, and then the existing correlation must be established to achieve a synthesis of the urban landscape: The urban landscape is based in the natural environment. Within the plane (in the urbanized space) the genetic morpho units are presented, these can be seen in the drawing of the plane and give rise to some forms in the plane in the urbanized space.
The city of Guanajuato has been the object of architectural urban landscape interventions; As World Heritage City, the historical persistence of the intangible cultural heritage is preceded by the study of its present society. Guanajuato has evolved in a remarkable way supporting adverse natural and social events, resurging marvelously despite the changes in its economic structure, because of being a city that generates wealth in the mining industry as a primary activity, nowadays represents a low percentage transforming into a cultural tourist city with a vocation for service. These changes are reflected in the economy, trade and culture of its inhabitants, but mainly in the landscape. In the city, by its natural evolution the landscape has been transformed in such a way that in its majority it is at the moment an artificial landscape, created by the man, and that in the view of the spectator is interesting, almost magical, where visual messages are perceived Varied as much in its structure as city but of isolated elements, but integrated harmoniously in the urban set, thus we perceive religious, civil, historical, commercial, educational, cultural, industrial constructions (mining).

Memoria di un patrimonio italiano all' estero
Riccardo Morandi (Roma, 1902 - 1989) was an Italian civil engineer best known for his interesting use of reinforced concrete. Amongst his best known works abroad we have the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, an 8 km crossing of Lake Maracaibo, in Venezuela incorporating a cable-stayed bridge and a bridge in Barranquilla, in Colombia, designed in 1970-1974. In Italy he has worked to the exploration of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and embarked on the design of a series of cinema structures and very important bridges. The document analyzes the work in Colombia and the sad fate of the modern engineering in these countries where there are no laws of protection of cultural heritage.

The Fiction of Reason: Tafuri and the Avant-Garde
Though many architects reject the system of rational urban planning by presenting utopian designs, critics like Manfredo Tafuri consider the most experimental projects of the 1960s and 1970s as meaningless paper architecture with no concern for the social reality of the city. He connects the contemporary architecture with the historical avant-garde of Italian rationalism, which was always related to social transformation and critical resistance against established society, and considers modernism as a development in which the avant-gardes - visions of utopia come to be recognized as an idealization of capitalism, a transfiguration of the rationality into autonomous form. Yet, Tafuri also relates Le Corbusier´s rational designs to multiple readings that also include a surrealist sensibility. He constructs the architectural concepts around the struggle between the universal values represented by nature and the rational values represented by technology. A case in point is the Beistegui Apartment in Paris (1930-31) who was a collector of surrealist art.
The architecture of the 1960s and 1970s overthrew the modernist principle of formal composition, functional fit, and constructional logic by opening up the discipline to the realm of artificiality, consumer imagery, Pop art and science fiction aesthetics. Yet, critical positions, such as Tafuri, speak of a technocratic idealism, claiming that this submission to the present totalizing technologically advanced conditions of production and consumption would strip the emergent experimental lineage of a social and political efficacy. Tafuri dismisses both the modernist ideology of the functionalist plan and the nave belief in progress. Both positions make architecture the efficient agent of capitalist 'planification' and, indeed, complicitous with the commodity system, that fully arrived in postwar consumer culture. Hence, such projects cannot serve as operative criticism, which aims at the reengagement of the discipline, because the autonomy of architecture closely connected to its social functions.

Continuità e razionalità del progetto
The architecture rational measure is all inside the lesson Alberti once the bill takes charge of responding to the needs of modernity of their time without giving up the arduous search of concreteness. A measure representing values and meanings or even more often, such a limit to be defined in one word ethics and aesthetics of architecture.
Through the concreteness of the classical legacy rationalist compositional research is recognized in the theory of a method, the extent of the form, the texture of a real and concrete language with the responsibility due to issues such as architecture and the city they are civil, public and collective.
The rational architecture building process is therefore recognizable origin, the idea, and its purpose, the construction. In modernity of its rational project explores the time of classical culture to grasp the meanings and values and transfer the idea of a logical architecture and concrete keeping in mind that the architecture draws nourishment from the ancient roots being able to consider the classic nous generator that particular world of architectural culture of the rationalism.
As with Adolf Loos, the consistency and coherence of theoretical Aldo Rossi of the classical world finds its construct and refined in history of tradition with the certainty of tradibilità of the past. As for the Alberti adheres to the reality of the time and the culture of an to express the authenticity of the work.
Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Ludovico Quaroni and Giuseppe Samonà have interpreted the difficult modernity of the twentieth century in the schools of Milan, Venice and Rome and Rossi reflects the heritage of the outstanding masters of rationalism to renew and transmit the rational language in Italian schools of architecture and leads to completion the Homeric myth of the father who is so accomplished their spirituality.

La torre del templo Santa Lucía, Ambalema, Colombia
This document describes the modelling and structural analysis process of the tower of the ancient temple of Santa Lucia in Ambalema, Colombia. Considerations used in the construction of a fully three-dimensional model are presented; the model was used to obtain an approximation of the state of stresses in the structure, produced by seismic and service loads. Seismic loads were obtained by using a linear dynamic analysis, in which maximum values of stresses are produced by an abrupt change in the rigidity of the structure, this could cause failure in the most critical points, under the occurrence of a higher magnitude earthquake than the one analyzed in this paper. Stresses produced by service loads do not exceed the strength of the materials; this condition does not represent any failure risk for the temple

Architect of “altro moderno” and that of “post modern” fought, in different times, a cultural battle with a common aim: to overcome the stylistic homogenization of International Style. The theoretical and methodological convergences between these two architectural “schools” can be analyzed through the juxtaposition of thought and works from two of the most representative architects: Francesco Fichera and Guido Canella.

Razionalismo: Architettura come Anamnesi
On the Rationalism, the Critique has lived under the shadow of prejudice that the tension towards abstraction of the Universal had hard will to ignore, as a reset, the way that History had ever done. No abstraction, no metaphysic, can detach from the Reality (cannot to be other than representation), otherwise its in-founded.
Therefore, if Rationalism has meant a great page of architectural history, this has been possible thanks to its foundation: [his] memory. Here, memory is increasingly understood exclusively in a sense extra-linguistic. Memory - as archè of each aesthetic thing - is the arché of architecture of Reason. The architecture - even in the case of Rationalism -, always returns to think of her arché.
Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Hilberseimer, and all the great Rationalists Masters, have always aimed at overcoming the contingent conditions that produced their works, in search of architectural principles remembering the great lesson of History.
The architectural logos is always intended as a separating tool of indistinct subject/object of phenomenal reality, in favor of the expression of the timeless principles, to make it objectify. Being generated a singular paradox: the architectural object genealogically looking at his past, doesn´t look the past or the future, but 'is'. Appointing memory, here we don´t want to propose - or restore – a 'principle of authority' of past, to determine a similar rule that had the Classical Orders, for much of the great architecture of the past. It would be a mistake to think of the phenomenal dimension of architecture.
It refers here at the essentials of those phenomena; what it´s in the basement of the historical context by thinking 'isms'.

The italian Rationalism, starting from Giuseppe Terragni, was aiming for continuity, in spite of the appearances of the clamor avant-garde, with historical tradition of the cities. Continuity that will be confirmed, amplified and clarified, from Giuseppe Pagano and Ernesto Nathan Rogers and that it will push their positions and the italian Rationalism in the territory of the Realism.
The Milan Rationalism of the years Seventy and Eighty, of Rossi, Grassi and Monestiroli, will be found to face the Italian reality in a social and economic climate deeply changed but always in continuity with the teaching of the masters. But has their work been able to meet that reality to which they aspired? I believe of no, if not in way fragmented and occasional. The Milan Rationalism seems to have forgotten the fundamental lesson of Rogers on the Time and seems clogged in an abstract architecture, ahistorical, although to lines poetic.

The competition for the construction of a staircase leading to the bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Naples was published with the aim of ensuring a new use of a pre-existence of great historical and artistic value, characterized by a complex spatial organization. The following project interprets the design of the access to the tower structure as an opportunity to reclaim the space around it. In line with the notice of competition, the new architecture is intended to mend the tear generated over the years by numerous interventions of modification and restoration that have characterized the monastic complex.

The paper is a description of two projects for the historical city of Naples. The first one is a building in an urban empty space near the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II and is a multi-functional structure for the students but also an occasion to revamp the Pignasecca square. The second is an urban project, developed in the context of a teaching experience, along the waterfront of via Marina to define, through towers on a basement, the limit of the city toward the sea. Both projects, even if at different scales and developed in different occasions, started from the occasion offered by an article of the Norms of the Urban Plan of Naples about “ruins and empty spaces resulting from demolitions”.

The church of Hagia Sophia in the 6th century: the birth of a symbol
This essay brings us back to the birth of the church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, in a moment of great splendour of the Byzantine Empire. The ''great church'', as it was defined, played a symbolic role, both from the political point of view, in order to assert the power (and the profession of faith) of Justinian, both from the theological point of view so as to emphasize, with its play of lights and shadows, how divine wisdom underlies creation. The Sixth-Century propaganda helps us to imagine the importance of this building since its construction and how, in any time, possession of this masterwork has been desired. In the name of inter-religious peace, its use today as a museum must be defended.

This article is intended to, address one of the topics, more sensitive in the development and transformation of modern societies, with a look from informatical sociology (a term coined it as a novelty), which implies a paradigm shift in hermeneutics it is about man, society, the habitat it occupies, like cities, and the passing of traditional societies to modern societies, reflecting on their dynamic, transformations in the ICT, because although this is a recent and unusual boom, always through human evolution, this concept has always used technology tools, chords character with its historical context. Reflection is epistemological and sociological nature, showing the origin and development of its natural habitat today day, which has become the city, and as the latter has been changing its social dynamics, reaching new conceptualization of digital city, expression tacit of knowledge development and the information revolution, converging in the TIC, as they are known today. Knowing this epistemological development is essential for the new generation of young people who were born in the digital age, and assume it as a present, without knowing their past, and the vicissitudes that man has passed up to the current historical development; knowledge that will give them a frame of reference to understand and make their own history.

In the landscape it is possible to recognize certainly the shape of the local singularities. It is possible to gain again, conserve or lose the local meaning of the places if we are able or not to understand (composing/designing) the need of introduce new and different elements in the context. On the Costa Ionica - the project area of the 6th Lid´A Laboratory - as elsewhere, the tumultuous urbanization and the construction action already overcame the limit that linked this heimat (native place) and the genius loci. Here the many “eco-monsters” are buildings that are witness of this violence. A demolition project can represent here not the tabula rasa but the architectural art of forgetting. Through demolition it is possible to mark a new beginning, a way of doing architecture after the perception of the loss of the local character: the trauma of demolition, able to take back to a measure, opens again the place to the confident and positive reception of Architecture. Demolition becomes a rite of re-foundation, of a new possession of the site: the demolition makes again the place, in the sense that it is necessary condition for the construction of a “new place”. Demolition opens again to the meaning of a void and re-builds the condition of an architectural potential in the site. Within an incessant dialectic between memory and oblivion, programmed destructions for the construction of a new landscape produce a new landscape, producing mutually demolition and construction and, in this sense, a Project concerns both: only in this way it will be possible to introduce a architectural technique of landscape.

Il complesso dello Spirito Santo a Napoli
The essay examines the building of the Faculty of Architecture in Naples, a work by the Neapolitan architect Marcello Canino, dean of the faculty in between the '40s and '50s of the twentieth century. The project is the result of a revamping work of a sixteenth-century religious complex, remodelled in the Baroque period. The Conservatory in the twentieth century housed accommodation and conditions of the building felt the weight of centuries. It was therefore decided to intervene demolishing much of what was left of the old complex and the new project was entrusted to Marcello Canino. The analysis is performed on historical and compositional plan, in the form of direct comparison between the previous religious building and the new building, by searching for analogies and references.

Bogotá D.C y Santiago de Tunja. Problemáticas centros históricos
Through the development of the semester, we find a problem to focus and solve it. This investigation had as main topic the historical center, studied since a point of view where the heritage was the most important idea.
As well, this investigation is made by three parts. The first one is the historic context that the Candelaria neighborhood had had in the Bogota's center. I made a big focus in the apple that is between the streets 10th and 11th and the avenues 4th and 5th; nowadays there is La manzana cultural Del Banco de la República. The second part is about the development of a hypothesis related with the cultural apple, it´s going to be work since the question How the Manzana Cultural del Banco de la República can show the Bogota´s architecture identity and tradition? This part was about the seven ages of Colombia's architecture and creates a link between the main elements that can be particular of Bogotá D.C and the Manzana Cultural. The last part of the investigation concludes with a critical comparison about the Bogotá's Historic center in a contradistinction with the Santiago Tunja's Historical Center.

La sperimentazione del calcestruzzo armato monolitico in Inghilterra
This essay considers a new building technology: the monolithic reinforced concrete, invented by Ove Arup and used by different architects, applied to houses and residential buildings realized in England in the Thirties. The aim of this new system was to organize the project and the structure in the same period, with a plan completely free, and it will be analyzed also in comparison with uses of a traditional system of reinforced concrete by the same architects.

The wide-ranging debate relating to the architect's responsibility towards society has often been over-simplified by use of the term participation, resulting in the production of a tide of literature on the subject. De Carlo was one who supported participation, but the matter is not as simple as that. Numerous examples have been cited, mainly of residential architecture, some of which council housing, in which the architect interviewed the inhabitants. Several critics have commented that he used maieutic to convince people to support his projects; others claim that in reality it was only a pretext for propaganda and publicity. What is certain is that participation was a key word for De Carlo, who was an attentive anticipator of present-day issues. The intention of this work is to explain De Carlo's theoretic by means of the cultural context and editorial production, in order to arrive at an understanding that the object in discussion is not participation (which can be defined as a tool) but rather the role architecture can have with regard to society. This will be explained by means of a close examination of the most noteworthy events which took place at the end of the CIAM until the creation of Team X and from the tenth Triennial of Milan in 1954 with the Mostra dell'Urbanistica entitled “Cronache Italiane”, up to the seventh Biennial of Architecture in 2000, organized by Massimiliano Fuksas entitled “Città, Less Aesthetics, More Ethics”. A rapid survey, similar to a trailer, in which the real protagonists are always the same: space understood as architecture and society understood as the people who inhabit it.

Archeologia e architettura
This text describes a project for the archaeological area of San Carminiello ai Mannesi in Naples within the ancient Greek-Roman centre of Naples. The functional hypothesis is the construction of a building for students accommodation and of an archaeological museum but what is important is the ''architectural'' theme of “building above” that both the facilities try to interpreter. In this way, in fact, the buildings, suspended on the archaeological excavations, are able to establish a new relationship between ruins and the city in a new vision for the urban archaeological project.

The defense system in Sicily during the Second World War is characterized for the most part by military structures of small dimensions, in other cases it is a complex articulation of the spaces and the volumes (2 or 3 elevations), towards the attention to detail, especially when it came camouflage bunker (stone, house, apse, etc.,). The construction was done on the project of the General Staff and the material used was the brickwork and reinforced concrete and not. Natural ventilation is favored by placing a different level inputs with outlet air in places where it was difficult to stagnation gas. Artificial ventilation instead was realized through appropriate external vents. The heating was done with traditional wood stoves. In the Palermo area there are, information retrieved by military archive of Palermo, n. 2,075 military emplacement, different in shape, material and attached environments such as those of the shelter and ammunition. The bunkers also called casamatta, fortino e pillbox; They are situated on the coast, in the provincial roads, in the railway line and still at strategic locations camouflaged with the environment around.
The system of bunkers, is on one hand an evolution of the defense systems of the territory until then in use as the coastal guard towers, on the other hand, in the late twentieth century, it shows how a system obsolete and replaced by the most advanced technological systems (drones, satellite, etc.).
After the war, many families had lost everything, including the house, they took possession of the abandoned bunkers and trasformed in permanent housing. The people did their best to soften the dark aspect of Bunker. The walls were repainted in bright colors and the side of the thick outer walls were built small gardens. Today, most are in a complete state of abandonment by reason of their location, some have been demolished in the vicinity of roads and railway lines, while a small part was entrusted to associations that allow the fruition through guided tours. The renovate and development of the bunker together with guard towers make it possible to describe not only the defense system in use in our country connected to different historical events, but also to examine in depth the aspect technical-constructive of military construction (materials, type , etc.)

Now it wants the mastery of ''mechanic'' in place of that of ''bricklayer''. It wants architects able to build while having to think about or be able to disassemble. Oftentimes we see the arrogance of so many artifacts that arrogate to themselves the right to feel immortal and instead of this are only premature obsolescence ungovernable. The implementation timing of contemporary architecture are often Jurassic, and even when the building is not already completed, usually the circumstances for which it was wanted change, impairing the realization that more and more often doesn´t allow to go back. Architecture is no longer able to keep up with the constant changes that the environment imposes (now increasingly rapid). Some case studies take us to a deep reflection. We will have, therefore, to rethink architecture with all the meanings of the temporal transformation, then operational reversibility.

This paper reports the first step of a research project aimed at introducing soft computing techniques in the field of post-earthquake reconstruction. In April 2009, a disastrous earthquake struck the Italian city of L'Aquila, causing 309 deaths and damaging thousands of structures. As a result, Italian authorities established a regulatory framework for rebuilding process, which determines precise limitations for the seismic improvement of damaged buildings. According to this framework, a structural design final outcome, “eligible” or “not eligible”, depends on structural capacity and cost of works per square meter. The author, having worked to the seismic improvement of more than 10 RC and masonry structures damaged by the 2009 earthquake, believes that this evaluation system can be greatly improved through the use of simple soft computing tools. The goal of this work is to define a framework within which to build a fully automated methodology for decision support, with the aim of making the reconstruction process better. Fuzzy Logic seems to be the natural background for a methodology that aims to mimic the human expert judgment, in an environment where information is often vague and/or inaccurate.

Innovation and Technology
The identity consolidation which takes place in giving value to the historic and archaeological heritage, can find a key-point in the technological innovation, if this one is conceived as an instrument at the service of knowledge and of its widespread communication.
This contribution shows a design experimentation for the physical and virtual fruition of a singular proto-historic site: the Early Bronze Age Village in Nola. This discovery, unique of its kind, allowed the reconstruction of the physical and social organization of the Village. The design experimentation has been the occasion to verify the applicability of technologically advanced information tools whose aim is the realization of personalized knowledge paths. The use of the Augmented Reality increases the perception and interaction of the user with the environment which is enriched with visual, graphic and textual information, synchronized and developed in the virtual space, that the user cannot directly observe with its own senses. The perceived effect is that of a virtual space which coexists with the real one, in which the user is free to move, interacting with it. As a support of the system, the project expects the realization of punctual light architectures and organized paths, for a physical fruition compatible with the characters of the archaeological area. The project approach is shaped around the respect of the needs of conservation and defense of the archaeological heritage, but, at the same time, efficient for the widespread knowledge of historic, archaeological and social characters of these “valuable goods”. The support structures have the same generation matrix, modified according to the expected functions; they have been conceived as punctual, light and temporary sustainable architectures, designed according to the main rules of the eco-oriented building.
In this scenery, it is possible to read the signs of a new relationship between technology and archaeological environment.

The archaeology of the city
Inside cities born with Mediterranean civilizations coexist signs of the past and contemporary. The archaeological ruins are all that now remains of buildings that were designed and lived in a different era and for this reason the instance of archeology and the instance of the architecture should not be considered as opposed to each other but should interact to find the best solution as appropriate. The discovery of archaeological remains within the urban fabric change the existing spatial relationships and would require that these be reformulated through an architectural project. In contrast, the non-intervention is the risk of degradation but also of a loss of sense for the found artifact and also corresponds to a failure to take a position towards the archaeological remains. The intervention in an archaeological urban area should first define the margin; secondly entail a critical choice, that is a selection as to determine a hierarchy that allows the reading of these; finally ensure resemanticization and reintegration of archaeological artifact within the contemporary city through the inclusion of new uses. In this regard some recent projects realized in Spain, whose theme is that of coverage and the fence interpreted as habitable volumes, appear significant; projects in which the function is not necessarily linked to musealization of archaeological finds.

The situation of poverty in the Republic of Burundi is one of the most extreme in the world, 93% of the population lives below the poverty line. Less than 10% of the population lives in urban areas and many peasants mostly live on subsistence level. Because of poverty, many families build their homes on their own invented materials: cardboard, plastic, or mats on illegal land obtained during the occupation. These settlements, as a rule, do not have adequate public services, a healthy environment or public safety. The social environment in the vicinity can be a breeding ground for all kinds of problems: many children often do not attend school, people do not have paid work, and some of them may even be involved in criminal activity. Therefore, the government faces enormous challenges in the areas of sheltering the urban poor. This study focuses on showing the need of durable housing for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). The objective of the study is highlight the needs of the low-income residents and to preserve the vernacular building cultures. A quantitative and qualitative methodology is applied with both social and physical analysis. The result of this research is a proposal of a typical cluster able to group a population of 5000. In this way permanent shelter will be gradually provided to the 80,000 Internally Displaced Peoples in different provinces of Burundi.

Redesign of the Lenin Memorial Zone in Ulyanovsk, Russia
The degree project ''Redesign of the Lenin Memorial Zone in Ulyanovsk, Russia'' focuses on revitalizing the Lenin Memorial Zone and converting it into a museum complex titled ''The Epoch of the USSR.'' Designing the Interactive Center, titled the ''Global Experiment Laboratory,” will be a starting point for the creation of the Museum Complex in the Lenin Memorial Zone and to regenerate the whole city center. The field of interest of different parties, such as citizens, regional economic planners and federal authorities, will be discussed.
Urban development problems of the central part of Ulyanovsk, as well as their consequences, were analyzed and recognized as being typical for many cities of the former Soviet Union. Solving such problems as the degradation of environmental quality, city center decay, a lack of identity, lack of residents` involvement, huge unused spaces, inconvenience and the alienation of urban design will increase residents' quality of life, sense of security and participation and thus will make the city center attractive.
The central part of the city has long been in need of an upgrade, a new material-cultural layer, and the energy of the 21st century. But the near-positive effects of modernization that create a new identity can cause problems, including the definition of cultural value and handling the Soviet heritage. Aspects of maintaining a historical balance will be mentioned.
The degree project is also considered an example of the transformation of the Ulyanovsk cultural potential on the threshold of the centennial of the Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917 and also as an example of the creation of a tourist destination.

The courtyard house is a type of familial and historic dwelling, which offers technical and design solutions to a variety of social needs, such as ventilation and family privacy. Previous studies show that the courtyard is a traditional typology that actively contributes to the wellbeing of the dwellers by providing aesthetic, thermal and social benefits. This study focuses on how traditional knowledge can be used as a tool to design contemporary sustainable architecture. Specifically the main research focuses on the spatial, static and material analysis of the case study Dar Dgi'ra in Rabat Morocco. The aim is to develop an exhaustive understanding of what is unique and significant about the Moroccan urban courtyard type (the Dar) so as to make informed choices for the management needed to preserve it for future generations. This project puts forward a design suggesting the adaption of the Dar using traditional knowledge for its reuse as a public hammam. The design proposal aims to conserve the Dar in a manner which respects its history while at the same time adapting it to ensure its future viability.

Industrial Archaeology and rehabilitation in Sicily
In the heart of Sicily there is a forgotten treasure, made of old buildings and stone wells, nowadays an integral element of the charming landscape in the hinterland of the island, what remains of the sulphur mines that were the protagonists of the world economy for almost two centuries. Among the ruins of the countryside of Caltanissetta and Enna, it is possible to follow the evolution of the techniques for the extraction of sulphur, the transition from archaic mechanical elements moved by animal power to more modern electrical motor, melting tools overtaken by the new efficient inventions of chemical engineering. A thriving business in the European outline, even though it was pegged to archaic and obsolete production systems, which have decreed its death. The greatest legacy of the yellow gold in Sicily is an estate of equipment in the area that it is worth protecting and imagining a reuse. Currently the ancient Floristella-Grottacalda mining complex is part of the homonym Park of the Mining, while a remaining area of Grottacalda Mine is poorly managed by private citizens. The article presented below is inspired by a detailed research on the historical and social dynamics of the economy of the sulphur, a work carried out in order to deepen the diachronic evolution of Grottacalda Mine. Starting from the acquired knowledge, several planning proposals were advanced for the recovery and the rehabilitation of architectural factories.

A comparative study of the lime mortar. Cali, Colombia
Two types of lime mortar (glue and plaster) have been characterized, and these types of lime mortar were used in the construction of masonry bridges, called Puente Calicanto or Puente Ortiz, which are located in Cali (Colombia) and were put into service in 1845. To this end, the techniques of X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy by Fourier Transform (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) have been employed. Using these different techniques, it can be concluded that each of these mortars exhibit differences in the proportion of their constituent materials, and the successful use of empirical knowledge can be demonstrated in the selection of the types of lime used by the builders. XRD characterization is adequate when crystalline phases are present, but for low-crystallinity materials, FT-IR analysis and DSC are more appropriate.

Water and Urban scenography in Universal exhibitions since 1939
This article complements a precedent one which studies the use of water in the urban spaces of the Universal Exhibitions until 1929. It is focused on three groups and some specific events in each one. As a beginning, we will mainly stop at the Universal Exhibitions of New York 1939 and 1964, Osaka 1970 and Okinawa 1975. We will realize how fascinating the relationship between light and water was, in order to transform the space and try creating the called “world of tomorrow”.
At the end of the century, as water begun being a precious resource, sustainability was one of the main aims of several exhibitions like Seville 1992, Lisbon 1998 or Hannover 2000. We will finally finish talking about the exhibitions during the XXIst. century; Zaragoza 2008, Shangai 2010 or Yeosu 2012 and future events like Milan 2015, where water is a new paradigm for human being development. Our article is a journey through Universal Exhibitions with water as its guiding argument. The liquid joins urban design, scenography, art and the poetic of space. The way it is used along the different exhibitions, is a reflection of human being aims, its sensitivity and society interests.

Water, essential material for the spatial creation from the territorial scale up to the most intimate one, has been used along history to create scenographies. We will study its use in the urban spaces of the Universal Exhibitions, ephemeral cities, created specifically for important cultural events which show new trends in urban development as well as the last technical advances and artistic concepts. Thus, we will focus on their different scales, from new urban planning up to the last water piece detail.
Because of the amount of events since the Universal Exhibition in London in 1851, beginning of our travel, we have selected two groups and some specific events in each one. As a beginning, we will visit the London Exhibition in 1851, the Chicago´s Columbine one in 1893 and the Paris one who took place in 1900. We will realize how fascinating the relationship between light and water was, in order to transform the space, both in their scenographic fountains and their landscape design.
We will finish at the beginning of the twentieth century, studying the ludic use of water in Seville´s Exhibition in 1929 and the evolution of “waterlight” art and the “magic fountains” of Barcelona the same year. During those ages, water scarcity was not a problem, the liquid was more a medium than a valuable good and current sustainability ideas were still far. Everything would change during the twentieth century and would be a new paradigm during the twenty first one but, it would be another story which we will study later. Our article shows a crossing travel through Universal Exhibitions with water as its guiding argument. The liquid joins urban design, scenography, art and the poetic of the space waiting for our applause.

Modern and ancient architecture are part of the cultural heritage of a community and they are remarkably important in order to preserve a country`s identity. Policies regarding cultural heritage in a nation aim at the acknowledgement, conservation, sustainability and restoration of it as evidence of national culture for present and future generations. Nevertheless, this legacy is threatened by the risk of being lost, and there are different threats either anthropic (human-caused direct damage, fire, collapse due to lack of planning and retrofitting, inadequate environmental management) or natural (earthquakes, climate change, landslides, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, etc.) that can cause the loss or damage of architectural heritage. Risk management of cultural heritage is a worldwide concern, and as a result of the increase of natural disasters in recent years in the world, the international scientific community and international organizations such as UNESCO are working to confront this problem, making different sectors aware of the importance of dealing with this problem and establishing appropriate risk management policies for cultural heritage as an important tool for sustainable development in a nation. Considering this important issue, the main goal of this article is studying seismic risk of architectural heritage and prevention policies. Seismic risk is a topic of interest in many countries, especially in Latin-American, middle-eastern and far eastern countries such as Japan. Studying seismicity as well as the actual situation of cultural heritage in Japan and Colombia, this article shows preliminary results of a research project on comparing the two countries in terms of retrofitting methodologies and risk management policies to protect architecture that is considered cultural heritage, which is important to reduce its vulnerability. This article also includes some considerations about laws enforced in both Japan and Colombia to protect architectural heritage in high seismic hazard regions and their prevention strategies.

The land coast, with particular emphasis the port-city, are in fact used more and more like a menu in which different users increasingly move freely according to their needs.
The new definition parameters with respect to which the landscapes are recognizable, articulating configurations, immutable, and not concluded, but on the contrary, variables are always open and more leads, not the placement of functions, but the interaction between subjects, and actually pushed social, cultural, political and economic ...
The port city now seems more like a miscellany, and a composite variable, the definition of which combine multiple devices and whose understanding and operational management appears to be no longer in the perimeter of registers and formal, but the identification of rules and tactics logical drive and able to predict particular outcomes and the evolution of the different dynamics and vocations.
“Dream City”, “Dream Lands” and “Dream Country” will constitute the new benchmarks in the definition of geographies based on imagination, perception and use of spaces and scenarios from the sensitivity of each individual and class user, until the size of the global imaginary fantasy, with respect to which space, urbanity and territories are distinguished as “complementary” or “complementary” depending on the specific “action brands” and “areas of opportunity”.

Globalization is strongly connected to our metropolitan cities: goods and individual mobility increases, lifestyles and needs change, new ways of living arise.
The economic crisis is often seen as a brake on growth, but in reality it can turn into an opportunity to revitalize the research on new solutions and methods towards economic, environmental and social sustainability.
Against this background, the problem of housing emergency comes to light. New policies designed to stimulate social housing provisions have to be improved in order to develop the supply of affordable housing.
The Public Administration must recover its traditional role of promoting and financing housing initiatives. Public-private partnerships seem to be the best solution to share tasks and risks. The private actor collaborates as an investor, with means and resources, and the public body acts as a provider and supervisor of the process to protect general interest.
The challenge is to achieve a rational approach towards social housing. The experience of a country, such as Austria, has been a good example owing to the implementation of effective procedures and efficient management. Analysing this model it is possible to identify problems in the Italian system and to outline guidelines to develop new housing policies towards the achievement of social and sustainable projects.

The use of contemporary composite materials as a technological solution for façade systems has been increased and improved during the last few years. This because those innovative materials can assure high performances and environmentally friendly solutions. New generations of acrylic surfaces, laminates and aggregates panels are brought into trade everyday and more and more performant compositions are continuously tested.
Moreover, a specific attention on recycled materials is being paid in order to reduce energy building consumption and foster sustainable and avant-garde technologies. Consulting a material library like for example Material ConneXion, we can find thousands of different composites having a big variety of physical and aesthetical properties and made with infinite sorts of components (from carbon particles to bovine fibers!) and processes.
Unfortunately, only a small amount of these innovative materials are already used on the building construction field. Composite materials like artificial stones, solid surfaces (i.e. Corian Dupont), laminates (i.e. Alucobond) and other less known elements are nowadays commonly adopted for ventilated façade solutions and help projects reaching high levels of building sustainability certifications like LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) or KlimaHaus. The purpose of the following article is to analyze the thermic and physical benefits the application of composite materials on the building envelope generates in the sense of environmental design prescriptions.

Keywords: Composite materials, innovative façades, renewable cladding components.

Experiencias desde la Gestión Ambiental Urbana
Usually the built heritage; the constructed floor; cultural diversity, and cultural landscapes are managed as objects of urban system and identifying value to society, and not as environmental problems , mainly urban . For urban environmental management behaves built heritage as environmental resources; Since they are the result of the interrelation – society-nature . Although treated even in a limited way, so it is not commonly done management from this perspective. One reason for this is the sectorial approach, which associates the resource with its origin. A conceptual model and a methodology are development to integrate concepts, instruments and tools, which will provide a change in the state of urban environment through conservation of resources, built heritage value. The experiences of urban environmental management developed under ecosystem, strategic and participative approaches has allowed people of Holguin province , deploy conservation experiences . His main contribution has been to integrate the isolated efforts of the entities that manage these resources under the criteria of their contribution to local development from an environmental perspective that allows a group to meet social needs associated with specific conservation and urban areas; the environmental status of the city.

The static conception of a warp of ''curved beams'' according to a horizontal position plane, hypothesized in glulam, it has had to confront with the impossibility of achieving structural elements with the desired geometry; the productive scenery, at present, solves only solutions arc mixtilinear, the only type derivable from the glulam with horizontal arrangement of the slats. This study, including the reasons for the detected limit, has investigated the technological feasibility of the glulam with a vertical arrangement of the slats, the only one that would allow a curvature in the horizontal position plane. To proceed in this direction, it was considered essential, advance, characterize the new material under the theoretical-experimental profile, analyzing the technical problems, to be addressed through a review of the production cycle, and researching the failure mechanisms, through a program of experimental tests.

The seismic vulnerability of vernacular architecture
The urban census, here proposed, is aimed at an expeditious as articulated knowledge of state of consistency, conservation and seismic risk of the architectural vernacular heritage, especially from the point of view of the seismic vulnerability, giving as assumed the condition of unpredictability of an seismic event, which is as evident as the probability of an earthquakes, characterized by an assigned intensity, in a pre-defined areas and considering a pre-assigned time window. The tool, described below, does not have a technical value in the narrow sense, it primarily do not want to suggest how to act on historic vernacular buildings, but rather it wants to provide general technical data of whether it is possible to intervene, proposing a preliminary scenario about outcomes, which are reasonably obtainable in particularly complex and compromise, contexts as, at first glance, it might seem, in terms of preservation of historical architectural vernacular heritage, in the case study of San Procopio. The contextual conditions are often the reason of the need to propose an expeditious tool, which is not only fast and unique, although at the same time able to document and represent complexity and variants of an architecture without architects, but also able to be used with a good level of control and uniformity by the average practitioner and professional, although not particularly experienced under the point of view of how to read and understand the ancient building, above all if not monumental, especially in terms of seismic performance.

In this communication are established some concepts and basic principles of the sustainable approach at an international scale. The criterions of the author are provided in this sense beginning from the specific examples of the Cuban scenario. In particular, it´s exposed the case of the Historical Center of the Old Havana and its development since the 80's, beginning from the establishment of its Master Plan as an organized guide of the work and integral management of the habitat.
The Historical Center of Havana was declared since 1982 as a Humankind Heritage. Since then the City Historian's Office and in particular its maximum leader the Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, have been developed a huge labor to achieve an improvement of that locality, taking into account a sustainable approach.
Some of the actions and results obtained in the Historical Center of Havana are presented as a singular case in Cuba, its successes and mistakes; but mostly, are examined the main objectives pursued in order to increase the life quality of the population living in the Historical Center and the vision of future that has the Office to find the solution for the most pressing problems of the place, as a approximation way to the achievement of sustainability in the cities and in particular in a high valuable location.

Between 1900 and 1950, the Latin American cities have received cultural influences from Europe. The main cities of South America, in those years, were suffering from severe alterations and environmental changes, and the social contrasts were many strong. The Latin American city had lost its cultural identity and, at the same time, the city was trying to acquire a new image. In this complex cultural context advances the Austrian city planner Karl Brunner (1887-1960). Brunner had studied in Vienna and in 1929 he had started working in Chile and then in 1933 in Colombia. Brunner works 20 years of his life in Latin America where he left important works and contributions. This paper intends to analyze the work of Karl H. Brunner for the development plan of Bogotá's city (1933-1938) and the introduction of organic planning.

The houses of Jardim Filhos da Terra
Slums are no longer temporary solutions for the need for housing, but are becoming permanent. The phenomenon of this state of informality as a solution to the urgent need for housing in an exponential growing economy has been present in different ages and has been studied by architects and urbanists throughout the history of architecture. Slums are present in most developing countries. Yet given that slums are a consistent reality in the urban fabric they need to be studied individually during their development, as if they were cells of a unique entity - the contemporary city. In the last two decades, there has been in-depth research on informal settlements. This research has focused both on the reasons for the phenomenon and on possible intervention methodologies. Research treats the slum as an integrated part of the contemporary city, studying it with the same tools as the formal ones. The research methodology used in ''Jardim Filhos da Terra'' combines the Saverio Muratori traditional survey method with modern tools of urban analysis. This was tested during a period of research in a favela of São Paulo in Brazil. São Paulo was chosen because the city has invested in in-depth research on this phenomenon and is making a strong effort to find a solution for the integration of the informal settlements into the urban fabric. From this survey it was finally possible to make a taxonomy of the 68 surveyed plots, and from there to hypothesize the informal urban development. The greatest result was the understanding of housing evolution within the plot throughout time. That is a tool enabling planners to make previsions for the development of this informal fabric.

With the Architectural Planning Laboratory within the framework of the DiARC, University of Naples, the educational and training path is led by the idea of a research impacting the public space, the landscape and the new housing dynamics, starting from the Greek-Roman city. The ancient centre is the beating heart of a city such as Naples, that can not be defined in a univocal way. There is more than one Naples, the city has manifold facets and ancient Neapolis is only its best-documented catalogue. This architectural project is the outcome of a travel of knowledge – a thorough knowledge of the places, their material and immaterial conditions, that defines the possible proposals for the ancient city centre. Even beyond the possibility of a transformation in compliance with the places, its aim is to tell the story of the strategic processes and the issues underlying real urban transformation.

The Reclamation Consortium of Central Tuscany, the authority for the protection and maintenance of soil and waterways, has entrusted us with a research project aimed at a cognitive analysis of the bridge and a rehabilitation and functional recovery project for a pedestrian public use. The date of the laying of the foundation-stone in unknown: it is believed to be a “Roman bridge”. The historical research, also supported by the static analysis to evaluate the degree of stability of such a structure, suggests the possibility to attribute the design of the bridge to Leonardo da Vinci.

Light, like the other elements of ‘fire', together with ‘earth', ‘wind' and ‘water' constitute the points of reflection upon which are based the research and activities of INBAR- the National Institute of BioArchitecture - that, with its first BioLaboratorio entitled “Let's catch the Sun” held Alcamo on 12.10.2012, saw the participation of various experts and academics in this field of study, chaired by the President of the Scientific Committee of INBAR , based in Trapani, Prof. G. De Giovanni. In particular, the contribution of E. W. Angelico has made an intense impact on the various forms of lights; between the natural and artificial; between the direct and indirect; between illuminated artefacts and luminous artefacts. Architecture often endows every action in direct proportion, light with the space - both for illumination (therefore, designed in relation to its dark and light) and to be luminous (therefore indicating the relationship between external and internal). Some examples permit the reading of the efficacy of light in a journey from the ‘natural' .

Aldo Rossi had two main ways to relate to architecture: one was constructed through the process of knowledge and the other one through the process of imagination. Those two ways are captured and synthesized in a couple of definitely antithetical projects: San Cataldo cemetery in Modena and Teatro del Mondo in Venice. San Cataldo Cemetery is an analog city for the dead, displaying the process deducted from the observation of the architecture of the city, that is where all his interests and feelings are condensed. The theatre in Venice, on the opposite, is the objectification in image of the idea of city, an architectural object capable of retaining in its inside the iconography and the spirit of the city of Venice.

An ideal home derived by a perfect geometry. The rigor of lightness, the theme of transparency and vertical distribution: proportion and perfection that are explained in all the scales and details: from the handle to the internal layout, from the wise use of solids and voids, to the materials. A corollary of all compositive aspects. The house for rent, located on Como lake, was designed, between 1938 and '39, by Cesare Cattaneo, rationalist architect from Como, just 3 years later his diploma in architecture at Milan Polytechnic. Being owned by himself, he can experiment freely, “without succumbing to the tyrannical desire of clients”, his enthusiasm for details. It is a small apartments building for the middle class, an ideal field to test a number of problems of composition and technology: from distribution to the location on the environment, from the cost to the good keeping in time, providing us, with a structure still well preserved, an innovative study of Modern solutions. The house stands on a site alongside a short distance from anonymous dwellings. The initial choice was therefore to communicate a violent conflict with the closer existing architectures, claimed the right to belong Modern architecture inside of city centers. Although the natural context of the lake, the visual cones, the broad urban environment are subtly understood inside the project, Cattaneo wants, with his architecture, to give an innovative element for the place, with characteristics that could almost be described as a monumental modernism.

The underlying concepts of earthquake engineering have evolved substantially over recent years. The objectives have become more ambitious and procedures for building design have become more complex. Countries subject to seismic risk have updated their standards: some to a considerable extent, others less so. In any case, greater attention is now focused directly on the prevention of building collapse by controlling the post-elastic behaviour that constructions bring into play to defend themselves when attacked by violent earthquakes. Consequently, design requirements are no longer met by performing only traditional resistance checks on assigned forces systems, because the checks must now refer to requirements with predefined performance criteria.

In his classic text Cities in History, Lewis Mumford discusses the image and social structure of ancient cities. Mumford refers to the ideal, or dreamed city, as belonging to the urban utopian tradition. This ideal city is the foundation of utopian cities as such.
This utopian trend has run along for centuries and can be interpreted as a natural human inclination to transcend the here and now. The utopian dream has been endless and has permeated all kinds of social endevours. The first versions of the South American utopia can be traced back to mythical drawings which seem to envision a ''fourth continent'' which , in turn, are the germs of the so called '' New World''

The city of Seville has become a complex relationship metapolis of mobility and function; this does not alter the fact that there are pockets of urban life enriched by his own physical condition and lifestyle. The case of the Macarena is especially interesting because it contains two realities of identity, on the one hand, the brand image produced by the powerful religious and folk tradition, projecting its image globally, and on the other hand the local culture, whose identity is directly defined by a physical medium (plot) and a dense social fabric adapted to a lifestyle somewhere between the customs of traditional and new forms of life that retrieve such traditions. The aim of this study leads us to approach the protection of intangible heritage through the protection of tangible heritage

BICOLORI a INCALMO. Vidrio y agua, paisajes de Carlo Scarpa
Carlo Scarpa ‘s work couldn't be understood without Venice matters, glass and water.
As Louis Kahn said, “his designs ask nature in order to shape the elements”. That's the way he would create.
We propose a travel to Scarpa's works, showing his main creative matters. Water, in relationship with glass and Venice landscape, would be used by the “professore” in order to structure the space and transform our perceptions and feelings.

La Mostra delle Terre Italiane d'Oltremare
The complex of the Mostra delle Terre Italiane d'Oltremare built in Naples in 1940 represents a real 'case' within the season of Italian architecture characterized by an opposition of different stylistic options (Rationalism, Novecento, Eclecticism, Historicism, Littorio) within the wider context of the rhetoric of the fascism. The complex provides clear relationships with the built city and with nature, using a matrix system of tracks taken from the tradition of the Italian city. Its recent application to the protected site UNESCO list, requires a particular attention to the mode of action on this important architectural and urban heritage.

ABSTRACT: This article presents a set of factors that have caused significant damage to historical brick-arch bridges located in the southwest region of Colombia known as ''Alto Cauca''. These causes can be sorted into three categories (natural causes, errors in the construction process, and human intervention). These factors must be completely identified as a task prior to any preservation and restoration work on these types of structures.

Key words: structural damage, brickwork bridges, construction pathologies.

Water as a scarce resource and as a common good undoubtedly constitutes a relevant issue since it is linked to the empowerment of local communities. Researches on developing countries highlight the role of traditional knowledge in achieving sustainability goals based on an appropriate use of natural resources, by establishing the harmony of architecture with the environment, the symbiosis of the techniques of organization of space with the traditions, the social habits, the spiritual values and the fusion between practical aspects and beauty. Some historical infrastructures of Italian municipalities in the Middle Age and in the Renaissance – such as the underground aqueduct of the city of Siena – also constitutes an example of these shared social-natural “constructs”.

In Colombia in the late twentieth century there were two events that we call ''catastrophic'' when compared with many other cases too easily regarded as ''exceptional.'' These two events occurred in the center of the country in the region of Tolima, with the eruption of the volcano Nevado Ruiz and the consequent destruction of the town of Armero (1985) and again with the earthquake, January 1999, in Armenia has destroyed the capital Department of Quindio. The paper will analyze these two events have been an important development opportunity for the affected regions.

The essay examines some of the James Stirling's projects and it tries to overcome the traditional location of his work in the field of the postmodern. The thesis is that James Stirling, in drawing on a repertoire of exempla from the European architectural tradition and in referring to the urban typologies of forum and acropolis for the construction of public urban spaces, is, despite his specificity, a rational architect.

Apart from the few recent buildings designed and built according to NTC (2008), design and intervention methods of existing buildings are going to be investigated with more and more attention. In the context of many historical cases, which have indicated the high vulnerability of these buildings, and in relation to the mandatory provisions of actual codes and regulations, this article introduces the problem outlining the regulatory system, then focuses on how to approach the issue of checking existing structures, and finally outlines the main mode of intervention, improvement or repair of existing hospitals.

The empirical approach in the evolution of bridge and structure
This paper illustrates the result of a study concerning the design and modeling of structures of the famous Italian engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979). His approach in studying and in building a large amount of structure, has a theoretical base, never investigated deeply. From an analysis of the documents and from a comparison among diverse buildings by Nervi, it is possible to recognize his innovative theory, in which structure and architecture are the subject of the art of making buildings: the theory of practice

The present work features the proposal for the repair, reinforcement and reconstruction of Bodega Arizu (Arizu Winery). The Bodega Arizu building dates from 1888 and it has been designated National Historic Monument. It is located on the Province of Mendoza (Argentina – South America) which is considered a high seismic risk zone. At first, the building of a shopping mall was projected in the site, but the idea was soon dismissed due to incompatibility with the area. At present, the building is run-down. The proposal aims at rescuing the architectural heritage represented by Bodega Arizu within the city's historic, social and economic context, since such winery is considered a symbol of Mendoza's viticulture history and technological progress. In order to undertake the proposal, several tests were conducted to determine the forces acting upon the existing structure of the former winery's main building (clay bricks - brick arches). The structure presents severe damages such as collapse decks, wall cracks, and leakage. All this deficiencies have led to increasing building deterioration. The seismic risk aggravates the situation and makes the structure prone to major damages caused by dynamic excitations.
For the purpose of exploiting the tourist and cultural potential of this industrial historic heritage site, various solutions complying with state-of the-art public safety standards and regulations in force were given and the winery building was adapted to present structural, architectural and urban requirements

The architecture of the Islamic world is often considered, even nowadays, like an indistinct whole, notwithstanding its century-old history and multiple artistic forms, risen on an area that involves forty nations and spans over three continents. This is the consequence of an Eurocentric and outdated vision, which considers Islam as a static, monolithic and closed universe: a symmetric vision also shared by some ideological trends existing inside the Islamic world itself. Islam art, architecture and culture, instead, cannot be fully understood if not considering the interactions and trading with various other civilizations. Breaking with the traditional isolation of the Muslim universe, this book underlines the fertile fabric of intercultural contaminations which characterize the architecture in the Islamic world during the Middle Age, between VII and XV century, from the Iberian peninsula to Sicily, from Egypt to India, and shows, thanks also to a rich, and mostly unpublished, iconographic apparatus, the peculiarity of the styles that mark different periods and regions.

The street has been regarded by history as one of the main components of the system of public space, since it constitutes excellence in field of communication and citizen relationships. However, walking or watching our cities, we see how people use public space for their own benefit, regardless of their collective character, which is evident in statements that deny, in the case of the street, their intrinsic public status.

I progetti di Egle Trincanato
Egle Trincanato's plans for buildings in the centre of Venice

The only well-known design to have been produced by Egle Trincanato and Giuseppe Samonà was the 1952 plan for the INAIL building at San Simeone in the centre of Venice. In 1960 their work was reviewed by Vittorio Gregotti in Casabella magazine and is generally considered to be one of very few masterly examples of contemporary architecture to be built in Venice during the second half of the twentieth century. The architects Samonà and Trincanato also designed at least four other buildings for the centre of Venice, which were never built. Meanwhile, Trincanato alone was responsible for three designs, two for hotels and one for a private house: these include a rationalist design for the Bauer Hotel and a plan inspired by the work of Wright for the Danieli Hotel.

Seismic isolation is coming out from its pioneer period and now it is on the way to become a popular system for the seismic protection of ordinary structures. The criteria concerning the architectural morphology, the selection of the structural configurations and other design options of seismic isolated buildings shall be discussed to popularise its use, to improve the effectiveness of ordinary applications, to cut down the construction costs and to open the way to new and wide applications. Moreover, the experts should emphasise the higher reliability of the design procedures commonly used for fixed-base structures, when applied to isolated structures. The target is to avoid that new applications are discouraged by unnecessary and complex analyses required by specific codes. Taking the opportunity of some demonstrative initiatives promoted by the local Government of the Umbria Region after the seismic ''swarm'' that struck central Italy in 1997 and 1998, this papers deals with practical topics concerning the application of seismic isolation to ordinary residential and commercial buildings.

Diverse positions and aims, with equal responsibility for a truly integral Italian architecture, on one hand ''able to design and detail'' of the other to follow ethics and democracy in the profession.

This paper illustrates the design criteria that guided the architectural and structural designs of the base isolated buildings of the new Emergency Management Centre of Foligno (Umbria).
A special attention was paid to the architectural shapes and structural configurations. They have been selected in order to maximize the effectiveness of the seismic protection that can
be achieved through the Base Isolation approach. The high potentiality of the Base Isolation option is also illustrated showing its capacity to solve the design problems that arose when,
at the end of a first structural design phase, the new Italian seismic code attributed Foligno to a higher level of seismic risk. The construction works of the buildings are now in progress.

Arte e Scienza a confronto - Olimpia Niglio
